Using surveys to support diverse, equitable, and inclusive hiring practices

Fully embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) at your organization means doing more than just hiring people from a variety of backgrounds. A comprehensive commitment to DE&I spans every part of the employee lifecycle. From attracting talent all the way through to succession planning, opportunities exist for organizations to think bigger and better about DE&I — and to make a true impact on their employees. Using Lever's Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Diversity surveys will allow you to create customizable surveys and track candidate responses, providing the data you need in order to understand your team's progress on diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Before diving in, check out the following resources for inspiration on how to cultivate a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace:

Read on for guidance on how you use Lever's built-in survey functionalities to help bring your DE&I vision to life.

Diversity surveys
Every Lever environment comes pre-configured with a default diversity survey, but it is highly recommended that you edit the survey so that the information gathered will be relevant to your organization's diversity efforts. Diversity surveys can include multiple choice and multi-select questions types. You can also target your diversity surveys by location, configured to be base don either posting location or candidate self-selection. Only one diversity survey can be active per location. Diversity surveys can also be configured for non-applicants who did not apply via your organization's job site. To learn more, refer to our help article on how to set up and use diversity surveys.

EEO survey questions
Lever’s EEO features allow you to gain a complete picture of your candidate demographics. U.S. federal government contractors are required to collect EEO data for OFCCP compliance purposes. If your organization is not under contract with the U.S. government, you can still use this functionality to track and measure diversity hiring efforts. In addition to displaying EEO questions on your job postings, Lever enables you to survey and collect diversity information from candidates who do not apply through your Lever-hosted job site, such as sourced candidates and referrals. If you have not already configured EEO questions for your job postings, check the box next to "Enable EEO questions" in your company settings. To learn more, refer to our help article on how to enable EEO survey questions.

Measuring DE&I using the EEO and Diversity dashboards in Visual Insights
The EEO and Diversity dashboards in Visual Insights can help you understand the demographic breakdown among active, archived, and hired candidates. The charts on these dashboards can help you answer the following questions:

  • What does diversity look like among candidates in my active pipeline?
  • How does the diversity across total opportunities compare to the diversity among hired candidates?
  • How do candidates' points of origin correlate with the diversity breakdown of hires relative to total candidate volume?
  • Where are candidates of different demographics exiting the pipeline? Are there trends in the reasons for which they are being removed from consideration?
