Data Warehouse Sync is a powerful tool that allows you to use your Lever data with a business intelligence tool of your choice. This tutorial will cover how to access your Lever data using the Amazon Athena connector in Tableau. The version of Tableau used in this tutorial is 2020.3, but the connection steps should work for any version of Tableau that has an Amazon Athena connector.
Step 1: Open Tableau and select the Amazon Athena connector
Step 2: Enter the credentials we provided into the login pop-up
Your organization's point of contact for Data Warehouse Sync should have received an email from Lever with a link to download login credentials.
Copy and paste the AWS Access Key (A) and AWS Secret Key (B) into the corresponding fields marked on the screenshot of the login pop-up.
Where to enter credentials
The port should be set to 443. The Sever (G) is
Enter your Workgroup (D) where the D is bolded above, and remove the curly brackets. With our sample credentials, the server would be athena.us-west-2.amazonaws.com:443;workgroup=leverdemo_8;
Do not remove the semicolon (;) - this is required.
The Staging Directory (F) can be found in the JDBC section of the credentials you were sent. The section is highlighted below in purple, and you will need to fill in two of the fields (workgroup and account id) with your own values. These values are labeled with the corresponding letter and color in the screenshot above.
This covers every field in the Amazon Athena connector. Click Sign In and Tableau should connect you to the data source.
Step 3: Load the tables into the environment
Click on the drop-down under 'Catalogue.' There should only be one option, which is "AwsDataCatalog." Select this option.
You will be prompted with a second drop-down called "Database." Similar to the Catalog dropdown, there should only be one option. Click this option.
A number of tables should have loaded in. These are the tables where your data is stored. For more information on what information is stored in which table, you can reference our Reporting Data schema.
Step 4: Select the relevant tables and load them into the data source
Based on the type of analysis you would like to perform, start dragging and dropping tables into the workspace. In the example below, the opportunities table has been dragged into the workspace. Note, you can join multiple tables to create a single data source.
At this point, you can use Data Warehouse Sync with Tableau like any other data source. You can manually refresh the extracts once a day or set a "live" connection, to ensure you always have the most up-to-date data available.
