With Lever, you can use a combination of keywords, boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), and filters to find the exact candidates you’re looking for. Lever searches across active and archived candidates.
As you enter your search terms, the dropdown menu under the search box will automatically suggest options to you, and underline the matching part of the profile. Lever’s search is smart! When searching for “Jon,” for example, the dropdown menu will display results for both “Jon” and “Jonathan,” even if the nickname “Jon” is never mentioned in the candidate’s profile.
Not only are candidate names searchable, but so is all of the parseable content contained in resumes (including previous employers and schools), notes, and feedback forms.
Let’s say you’re looking to hire engineers that used to work at Lever (we only hire the best, so I promise they're solid candidates!). When you type “Lever” into the search bar, the dropdown menu will display candidates whose profiles contain the word “Lever” in their resume, notes, or feedback forms.
When you do want to be more specific in your search, you can also search by fields. Fields allow you to search for specific attributes within a candidate’s profile, like email addresses, locations, organizations, and schools. As you can see below, clicking in the search box will actually display some examples of field-specific searches you can do. These are merely examples, and are not based on your individual search or user history. Learn more about searching on specific fields in Lever.
Search Results List
Click on a candidate from the dropdown menu to open an individual candidate's profile or hit ENTER to view a list of all the search results for a given query. Below is the list of search results you might see when you search for the phrase "digital marketing."
You’ll notice that the complete list of search results displays more information about each candidate that matches your search. We surface valuable information directly in the search results list so you can get relevant context at-a-glance. Here is a summary of the information displayed in each column:
- Name/Company: Candidate name, Companies, and LinkedIn URL (if available)
- Jobs: All job postings on the candidate profile
- Stage: Current stage (for active candidates) or archive reason (for archived candidates)
- Avg. rating: This number takes into consideration ratings from feedback forms as well as notes
- Snippets: The text within a candidate profile that matched your search query will be highlighted. You can also hover over the icon in front of the snippet to get more information about where on the candidate profile a particular word or phrase was found (e.g., resume, organization, school, etc)
- Last interaction date: Indicates the last user activity that was performed on a candidate's profile (i.e., stage changes, adding forms, etc). Click here for more info about what counts as an interaction. All search results are sorted by last interaction date, starting from the most recent
- Owner: The user that's designated as the candidate owner
You can also adjust your search terms in the large box above the search results list. Lever supports basic boolean search, so you can search for
On the left-hand side of the screen, you'll see a number of filters that you can apply to your search results. You can apply multiple filters at the same time to refine a large list of candidates. Filters can be applied in combination with keywords or by themselves.
If you just want to apply filters and don’t want to type in any keywords, simply click in the search box, and select “Go to advanced search…” at the bottom of the dropdown menu.
Stage / Archive Reason: From the dropdown menu, select Lead, Applicant, Interview, or Archive. Depending on which option you select, you'll see a list of specific stages within the pipeline to further filter down by. For example, selecting “Lead” would show you a list of all stages within the Lead pipeline.
If you select Archive from the dropdown menu, we’ll display a list of archive reasons and a list of stages underneath. This gives you the option to further filter down your archived candidates by archive reason and/or the last stage they reached. Below, for example, we filter our search results by those candidates who have been archived as 'Future Hire' and made it to the 'New lead' stage:

Rating and secret notes or application questions. Team Members and Admins without Sensitive Information Privileges will still be able to search by the candidate name, but will be unable to see additional details or access the full candidate profile.
Limited Team Members won't see suggestions or results for candidates unless they've been granted Sensitive Information Privileges, regardless of stage.
